NATO and the European Union maintain naval operations in the Gulf of Guinea to combat maritime piracy. The EU operation has recently been strengthened. The Gulf of Guinea is neighbouring the North Atlantic and its crossing is part of routes of special economic interest for merchant ships of countries of Europe and the USA. The International Maritime Bureau considers the degree of danger of the Gulf of Guinea for maritime navigation to be the highest, compared to other focuses of piracy on a global scale. READ MORE
