Angola: Regime Deepens Efforts to Influence Elections

JOÃO LOURENÇO's unpopularity, which cuts across vast segments of society, extends to the party's grassroots (AM 1470). The regime hoped to begin mitigating the widespread social discontent in the country in 2025 by launching policies to revitalize/strengthen the economy, considered capable of "attacking" the main causes of the phenomenon, especially unemployment, to improve the MPLA's performance in the 2027 elections (AM 1468). However, recent financial difficulties associated with the fall in oil prices have created an austerity scenario for 2026 (AM 1519).
