São Tomé and Príncipe: Tensions Between PM and PR Escalate
The relations between PM PATRICE TROVOADA (PT) and PR CARLOS VILA NOVA (CVN) have been marked by frequent episodes of tension, most recently after the Government signed a technical-military cooperation agreement with Russia, without the knowledge of the other sovereign bodies.
In private settings, ADI militants admit to abuses of power by PT and a lack of control that could lead to cases of corruption, but in public they remain aligned with the regime, to avoid losing privileges and out of fear of reprisals.
In an apparent show of strength, CVN, who is in title the supreme commander of the Armed Forces, met with the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (EMGFA), Brig-Gen JOÃO CRAVID on 27.NOV, at the peak of tensions with the PM regarding the approval of the new tourist rates.
