Mozambique: Nyusi Mobilizes Former Presidents to Contain Post-Electoral Crisis

The next few days, starting with 07.NOV, marked by large demonstrations in Maputo, are considered decisive in the future political equation, with notable signs of moderation in public interventions by VM, who continues to stand out as the main actor in contesting the FRELIMO government. Several emissaries from former PRs JC and ARMANDO GUEBUZA have sought to approach VM with the aim of his demobilising, without success.
In yet another manifestation of divisions within FRELIMO, the hardline faction of the party, associated with some of FN's main allies, including the leaders of the Maconde group, decided to proceed with a criminal case against VM for incitement to violence and crimes against authority. The ratification of the results by the Constitutional Council (CC) is generally seen as a mere formality, considering that, like the CNE, the majority of CC members are appointed by FRELIMO. The pressure now falls on the CC, which formally requested from the CNE, on 30.OCT, the minutes and notices of the city and province of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Tete, Zambézia, and Nampula, where more than 2/3 of the country's electorate is concentrated.
