Angola: Social Crisis Tending to Worsen

The trade unions, grouped into three confederations, have already promoted two general strikes and are preparing to convene another in JUN. The two previous ones, according to neutral balances, have achieved high membership rates, especially in public services such as education, health and administration in general. In MAY, in an unprecedented attitude, they abstained from publicly marking labour day.
The devaluation of the kwanza (AOA) has contributed to the pronounced rise in inflation in recent months, with consequences for the living conditions of the population of the rise of inflation (AM 1418). The impact on the social sector is pointed out to be more severe than initially anticipated. Food and non-food prices continue to rise to higher levels than previously expected. The most worrying situations are recorded in the provinces of Huambo, Huila, Cunene, Namibe and Bié (AM 1423). READ MORE
