Angola: Chinese Illegal Fishing Causes Friction
The association of Chinese fishermen with illegal fishing practices is due to peculiarities such as the public visibility that characterises their activity. Their fleet is not only more numerous, but it is also the one that fishes most in areas very close to the coast, usually blocked from techniques such as dragging.
In the fishing activity they engage in in Angola, the Chinese follow a model also observed in the fields of timber or mining – that of establishing partnerships with Angolans, mostly with links to the regime, and who, in general, are the holders of their respective licences.
