Angola: Lourenço Avoids Russia
At the beginning of his presidential term JOÃO LOURENÇO (JL) showed his desire to establish a greater balance in Angola’s relations with Russia, China, the US and the European Union. The intention was considered politically and economically correct – not only symbolically (to demonstrate a reformist spirit), but above all in view of the advantages that could arise from a more independent foreign policy (AM 1340).
Russian interests and influences in Angola have been losing expression. Recently, the Angolan Navy (MGA) began to count on its fleet with several ships acquired from Italy.
