Angola: Judicial power increasingly in the hands of Lourenço
PR JOÃO LOURENÇO (JL) has been strengthening his control over the judicial power in Angola (Supreme Court - TS, Constitutional Court - TC, and Court of Auditors - TdC), in a format of greater exposure, imposing candidates of his convenience in appointment of judges and members for the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSMJ). In influential circles of Angolan politics and society, JL's conduct is compared negatively with that of his predecessor, JOSÉ EDUARDO DOS SANTOS (JES), who also exercised influence over the high judiciary, but sought to promote some autonomy in the functioning of the courts, without interfering on administrative matters.
