Angola: Extension of Lourenço's mandate still on the table
The environment generated in several African countries by the emergence of opposition movements to the intentions/plans of incumbent presidents who propose to extend their mandates or want to be replaced by close family members, is not considered favorable to JL. In Senegal, MACKY SAAL's intention to extend his mandate gave rise to a climate of “popular revolt”; in the Republic of Congo there is also expressive opposition to SASSOU NGUESSO's intention to have his son replace him.
FILIPE NYUSI (FN), PR of Mozambique, is evaluating running for a third term, which would also imply a change in the constitution, in this case facilitated by the 2/3 parliamentary majority that FRELIMO has, despite the lack of internal consensus on the matter (AM 1390). The respective elections are scheduled for OCT.2024. The hypothesis, still considered “possible” of FN's intention to come to fruition, is, however, seen as a stimulus for JL.
The negative acceptance that JL currently has in his own party and in the regime includes figures who supported his nomination as the putative successor of JOSÉ EDUARDO dos SANTOS (JES).
