Angola: Regime “Prevents” Upheavals in Future Elections
For reasons among which the “lack of response” of the informal scheme set up to control the elections in Luanda is especially considered, the MPLA lost the elections in the capital. The emergency forced it to “distort” the results in the provinces in a way that was considered “careless” as a way to compensate for the “damage” in Luanda.
What happened in Luanda is attributed to a political-electoral environment described as unfavorable to the MPLA/benign for the opposition, under the influence of which its previous ability to control the process decreased. As a result of that environment, there was also a decrease in the propensity of its delegates to impose their intentions, as well as a “relaxation” on the part of CNE staff mobilized to monitor the process.
