Mozambique: “Political Route” in Cabo Delgado Incipient and Without Guarantees of Success
The exploration of a “political path” implies, however, the persistence of military pressure, which is currently stagnant. In recent months, there has been a decrease in attacks by armed cells in some northern districts, but there has been an increase in cell activity in the southern region of the province. The central districts (Macomia, Muidumbe, Meluco and Montepuez) remain at low-intensity risk, with occasional attacks, some of which ambushes on military and police units.
The SAMIM military contingent, composed of some of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states, led by South Africa, is limited by the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) approved in JUL.2021 and the participating states are under pressure due to the costs of their participation and the uncertain results achieved so far.
