Mozambique: Armed Popular Militias in Cabo Delgado Become an Obstacle
The popular militias created to defend some localities in Cabo Delgado, concentrated mainly in the districts of Mueda and Macomia and in areas mostly inhabited by the Maconde ethnic group, are beginning to worry the military commands due to the lack of control over their activity.
The militias, dubbed “local forces”, are currently composed of armed elements, many of whom are retired military veterans. They are engaged in local protection operations or in local support to FADM and police. The number of elements that compose them is unknown, but sources in the field point to c. 500 effectives.
