Mozambique: Siege and Containment Tactics Fail in Cabo Delgado and Allow Guerrilla Survival
The creation of a buffer zone between Mocímboa da Praia and Palma is being considered, at the level of the authorities and multinational companies, as a solution in a scenario in which guerrilla activity by armed groups present in Cabo Delgado becomes chronic and permanent. The securitization of this area is essential for the resumption of the LNG project in Afungi, also ensuring road mobility on some routes, namely for the supply of raw materials from Mueda towards Palma, via Nangade and Mocímboa da Praia.
The intervention of SAMIM and the Rwandan contingent (RDF) was previously defined with the Armed Forces of Defense of Mozambique (FADM) through the marking of intervention and "sweep" zones, followed by static positioning to prevent the return of armed cells and ensure land mobility. The RDF mainly engaged in the triangle formed by the districts of Palma, Mocímboa da Praia and Nangade, pushing the guerrillas to the southwest. READ MORE
