Guinea-Bissau: Alarm Among Foreign Investors After Government Capture of Portuguese-owned company
The revocation by the Government of the decree on privatization of the company Armazéns do Povo (ADP), with Portuguese capital - in practice renationalising it, 30 years after privatization - accentuated a trend of alarm in the local business community, namely Portuguese, with potential implications for the relations between the Governments of Portugal and Guinea-Bissau.
The episode is considered among the local and foreign business community as a reflection of historical particularities of ADP, but also as an extension to the business of the political dispute, accentuated with the attempted coup of 01.FEB targeting PR UMARU SISSOCO EMBALÓ (USE) and his Government, who assign responsibility for the attack to the PAIGC and to businessmen associated with this party.
With Portuguese capital of the company that owns ADP - Interfina, in which the Portuguese-Guinean ALFREDO MIRANDA ("Duca", ALM) and JORGE FERRO RIBEIRO (JFR, Geocapital) share capital - the case of the revocation of privatization is not generally considered as evidence of aversion to Portuguese capital by the Government, but, given the aforementioned characteristics of the decision, these are considered to be particularly exposed.
