Intensive Russian Propaganda in West Africa, Chinese in Sub-Saharan Africa

West Africa has been the biggest target of disinformation (40% of documented campaigns) and about half of these attacks are linked to Russia. From 2018-2019 campaigns have been launched with intensity and frequency aimed at Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, countries that have suffered military coups that Russian networks have helped to promote. In sub-Saharan Africa, 25 campaigns targeted at eight countries are identified, with the highest activity of disinformation actors linked to China, artificially amplifying Chinese and anti-Western narratives on social networks, mainly in six countries, South Africa and Zimbabwe being the most affected.
